What we know about shooting the Cornhusker Marriott

The Cornhusker is downtown Lincoln's historic luxury hotel — opened in 1926, restored multiple times, hosting Nebraska weddings for nearly a century. It's a hotel-grade ballroom venue with all the photographic advantages and challenges that come with that.

What we've learned shooting here:

- The Grand Ballroom is large and chandelier-lit — gorgeous for wide reception shots but technically demanding (mixed color temperatures, low ambient light). We bring off-camera flash and modifiers as standard for Cornhusker weddings. - The mezzanine balcony is the secret-weapon portrait spot — overlooks the ballroom, has dramatic architectural lines, almost always empty during the cocktail hour. - The exterior brick face at 13th and M is a great post-ceremony portrait backdrop, especially at golden hour when downtown light hits it. - Pre-ceremony getting-ready suites on the upper floors have huge windows — north-facing rooms have the best natural light.

Ceremony, reception, and the downtown advantage

Most Cornhusker weddings host the ceremony and reception in the same venue, but a meaningful portion combine it with an off-site ceremony (Holy Trinity Cathedral, Capitol Building exterior, Sunken Gardens). The 5-minute drive to most downtown landmarks makes split-venue weddings logistically easy.

The walkable downtown means we can run sunset portraits at the Capitol or in the Haymarket without losing reception time — a luxury most Lincoln venues can't offer.

Coordinating with the hotel

Cornhusker has an experienced in-house events team and a strict timeline for setup and breakdown. We coordinate with their banquet manager 30 days out to confirm timing for the first look, family formals, sunset session, grand entrance, and any other moving parts. This venue rewards good planning — we bring it.

Cornhusker weddings typically run Signature or Heirloom — full-day coverage, the ballroom reception demands competent low-light technique that the second-shooter add-on really helps with. Travel is zero (we're 5 blocks away). Cocktail-hour drone shots of the Cornhusker exterior at twilight are an underutilized magic frame — we add those when conditions allow.

Is the Cornhusker ballroom hard to photograph?

It rewards experienced photographers. Mixed chandelier color temperatures, large room volume, and traditional dark wood absorb a lot of light. We bring off-camera flash, color-correcting gels, and a second shooter as standard. Couples booking with a photographer who only shoots outdoors should ask hard questions.

Can we do portraits outside the hotel?

Yes — downtown Lincoln is your backdrop. The Capitol Building, the Haymarket, the historic facades around 13th and O. We typically plan a 30-minute walk-and-shoot during cocktail hour.

Drone at the Cornhusker?

Limited — downtown Lincoln is class D airspace (within 5 miles of Lincoln Municipal Airport), which means drone flights require pre-authorization from FAA LAANC. We coordinate this. Some exterior shots are possible; ballroom interior aerials are not.

How does the hotel handle wedding photography rules?

Pretty standard — no restrictions on photographer movement, no flash limitations during ceremony (always check officiant preference). The events team is collaborative and used to working with outside vendors.
