The light is the whole story
Sunken Gardens faces such that the best portrait light lands in the hour after sunrise and the two hours before sunset. Midday sun gets harsh and contrasty against the light-colored stone and pushes shadows under the eyes — shootable, but not the version of these photos you're picturing. If you have any flexibility, plan the couple's portraits for golden hour and you'll get the warm, glowing look the garden is famous for.
Where the photos actually happen
The frames people remember from Sunken Gardens come from a handful of spots:
- The terraced beds from above — shooting down the slope stacks layers of color behind you.
- The reflecting pool — reflections double the flowers and open up symmetrical compositions.
- The stone steps — great for a walking shot or a quiet seated moment.
- The far corners — where the planting is densest, for an intimate, wrapped-in-green feel.
A full couple's session moves through three or four of these without ever feeling rushed.
Timing around the public hours
Sunken Gardens is a public park, open to everyone during daylight — so it's rarely empty. That's not a problem with the right approach: we shoot tighter compositions that keep other visitors out of frame, and we move efficiently through the quieter pockets. Early morning is your best shot at fewer people. For ceremonies and larger group setups, check current City of Lincoln Parks rules on reservations and permits, since those change and larger gatherings may need arrangement.
What to bring and wear
Flowing fabrics photograph beautifully against the structured beds — movement plays well here. Solid, saturated colors pop against the greens and stone; very busy patterns fight the flowers. Comfortable shoes for the steps, and a second pair for the walking shots if your first choice isn't step-friendly.
