Every December and every May, the same thing happens on UNL's campus: the columns fill up with grads in regalia, the light is gone by 5:30, and somebody's mom is holding a coat in one hand and a phone in the other, trying to art-direct a photo she already knows she won't love.
I shoot graduation sessions on this campus constantly — I'm a UNL student myself, which means I know exactly which walkways clear out between class changes and which "iconic" spots are actually a crowd of eleven other families at golden hour. This is the guide I wish every grad got before booking: what it costs, where to shoot, and when the calendar actually forces your hand.
What UNL graduation photos cost in 2026–27
Our pricing is flat and published, because "starting at" games are exhausting for everyone:

That $250 base includes the things that are usually add-ons: two outfit changes (regalia + the outfit you actually like), 25+ edited photos, and a print release so you can print anywhere. Booking and payment happen online — pick a date, pay, done. No deposit phone tag.
The campus locations that actually work
The columns at Architecture Hall — the classic for a reason. Go early morning or on a weekday; Saturday before commencement it's a queue.
Sheldon's sculpture garden — clean lines, open shade, and it photographs like a modern gallery because it is one. Best mid-morning.
The brick at Andrews and the older quads — warm texture that flatters every skin tone, and it reads unmistakably "Nebraska" without a single N flag.
Memorial Stadium exterior — if Husker identity is the point, the stadium delivers it. We stay outside the gates; you don't need field access to make it look enormous.
Downtown and the Haymarket — five minutes from campus and completely different: brick alleys, neon, urban texture. The best galleries usually mix one campus stop and one Haymarket stop — that's what the two-outfit structure is for.
The booking math nobody does until it's too late
December commencement is the one that burns people. The ceremony lands mid-December, but by then Lincoln sunset is before 5 PM and the trees have been bare for a month. The photos you're picturing — golden light, some color in the frame — get taken in October and early November, while the campus still looks alive and the light still exists after class.
May grads have it easier: April and early May are genuinely beautiful on campus. The constraint there isn't light, it's congestion — commencement week itself is a zoo, so the calm sessions happen one to three weeks before.
The honest rule for both: book the session for about a month before your ceremony. You'll have the photos in hand for announcements (they take a week to print and mail — more math nobody does), the campus looks better, and you're not competing with every other family for the columns.
What to bring
Regalia, obviously — and steam it, the gown creases show. The second outfit should be something you feel like yourself in, not something a relative approved. Cords and stoles photograph beautifully; bring every one you earned. And if your family's coming to the session, send them to the Family package — the number of grads who tell me afterward "I wish we'd gotten one with my grandma" is the entire reason that package exists.
